Extra Facilities
Facilities for rail travel in Europe for customers with specific needs and those who require extra assistance.
There is normally a space in the trains (up to 670mm 26.38in wide) for wheelchairs. A special table, allowing for wheelchair maneuvers, or a tricket shelf is fitted. These spaces need reservations, but are normally no extra charge. Currently trains in Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland all provide disabled access on their trains. You are advise to check ahead of your travel to ensure that your needs can be met.
Eurostar Trains
Provision has been made for disabled people to travel on board international trains. There are positions for two wheelchair users per train in the first-class, non-smoking coaches. A special rate applies, not the full first-class fare. In the area designated for wheel chair users, there is room for the passenger's own wheelchair, which the passenger may continue to use for the entire journey. There are two seats in this area to accommodate both a wheelchair user and a traveling companion. Passengers in wheelchairs may access the toilet facilities by means of their own wheelchair.
Door widths for the Eurostar trains are as follows:
- Saloon 640mm (25.20in)
- Toilet 530mm (20.87in)
- Gangway 750mm (29.53in)
- Exit door 845mm (33.27in)
- Disabled toilet 700mm (27.56in)
- Vestibule/disabled toilet 740mm (29.13in)
Sleeper Services
The overnight trains will have a sleeping compartment specifically designed for a customer in a wheelchair with or without a companion.
Ticket Office
There are specifically designed toilet facilities in most main train stations in Europe.
Platform Edges
Tactile edges alert blind people of the platform edge.
Signs and Announcements
Clear pictograms are highly visible and there are audible boarding announcements (usually in local languages) although sometimes, due to the noise levels at stations, this may not be very easy to understand. So you will need to monitor the departure boards of ask for local assistance.
